You’ve found your way here, welcome! Hygge House is more than simply a space, it’s a concept that formed from a little seedling of a dream. If you’ve read our story, you know my husband and I lived a busy but wonderful life in Miami, Florida. We weren’t in need of running away, but like so many of us that get sucked into the responsibilities and minutia of our day-to-day, connecting became harder.
We did, however, find little moments to come back to each other and what was important. Our home was that space for us, meals shared together, special indulgences (even during the week), candles lit, warm blankets on our couch. It was what kept us sane during some of the times we felt lost and overwhelmed. Eventually, we made the leap to leave everything behind and move to The Great Smoky Mountains. It was big for us to start over like that.
What is Hygge?
Life here slowly became recreating that same essence in our new home. When we discovered the term hygge (pronounced hyoogah), which means conscious coziness in Danish culture, we knew that exact feeling! It was like we found vocabulary for what we’re always creating to keep ourselves sane, joyful and connected to each other. It’s something we practice every day from our morning coffee ritual to our evening glass of wine with a candlelit dinner and maybe The Office playing in the background.
Our Home
When we first saw this home, it was after a crushing disappointment in another home. Like so many things in life, this place was what the universe knew we needed even though we had our heart set someplace else. One of the things that sold us was the open possibility of its first floor. It was a vast empty shell. We saw it as an opportunity to make something, two suites so our visiting friends and family would have one more reason to come see us. That was always part of the plan to move here, bringing others to this special place so they too can experience peace, harmony and connection to self.
Peace and Wisdom in The Smokies

That’s what Western North Carolina provides. It’s an opportunity to be in our natural world, forests that are seemingly untouched with streams that don’t need anyone to tell them what to do because nature knows. It flows, and grows, and evolves.
Being among nature shows us that we are the same. We get confused in our daily lives and think we need people to tell us how to live, but actually, we are like that mountain river that flows effortlessly without intervention. Time spent here makes us feel energized. We leave walking a little taller and knowing our place in the world. We know that it’s all going to be okay because we’re creating our experience. We are powerful and connected to this great world we live in.
And that’s what we want you to experience here.
Be our guest
We’re happy to announce that we decided to open up our suites to travelers passing through The Smokies. After putting so much love into them, it seems right for us to put that back out to the world, to give others a chance to experience this.
Some of the best times we’ve had as travelers were because of the generosity of a stranger allowing us to stay in their home, apartment or spare room. We sought those experiences versus a hotel because we wanted to know what it was like to really be somewhere. Hygge Home is yours to enjoy.
Whether it’s browsing photos, tips, stories and recommendations here, or coming up to spend some time at hygge house, this beautiful mindset is yours to enjoy.
Welcome, friends. We’re so very glad to have you here.
